As some of you may well know, I rather like lipstick, and by ‘rather like lipstick’ I mean ‘obsess over and hoard like Smaug on a bad day’. Unfortunately, despite my love of lipstick, I’ve been gifted with lips that turn as dry as the Mojave the moment I forget my lip balm. Over the years I’ve gone from Vaseline, to various Nivea and Chapstick versions, to an ill-advised flirtation with Carmex – which resulted in sore, swollen lips for days after, and a lasting allergy to several mystery ingredients I just can’t identify.

Thanks to the Carmex incident, I’ve got a whole lot pickier with my lip products. As always, I’m in the middle of a long-standing, enduring love with LUSH products, and their lip offerings are no different. When I was in 6th form and working at my local pub far too many years ago, I fell in love with their cocoa-butter free ‘Lite Lip’ and the weirdly addictive ‘Happy Talk’, a hazelnut and black pepper balm that tasted strongly of coffee, despite none being in the ingredient list! Sadly, both are now discontinued, although I have a feeling I have tins of both tucked away in a drawer somewhere.

At the moment, my LUSH balm of choice is ‘Honey Trap’, a blend of mint, white chocolate and the eponymous honey that (for me) has a flavour that takes a while to get used to. It’s got to be onto something, though, as I believe this is one of the oldest of LUSH’s balm offerings, along with ‘Lip Service’ and ‘Whipstick’. ‘Honey Trap’ is a good, long-lasting balm – for me, this lasts for hours, leaving my lips feeling soft and non-chapped, hurrah! The balm does have a slightly drier texture than the other balms in this post, but it has the best longevity of the lot, probably because if this difference in texture.

Next up is the Body Shop’s ‘Chocomania’ Lip Butter, a recent addition to my ever-growing collection due to turning up to work one day without any lip products at all in my bag. Luckily (or unluckily, depending on your viewpoint) work is right next to a Body Shop store, so it was a case of in, grab the first lip product I saw, and out. Thankfully, I picked a winner. This lip butter is lovely and soothing, leaving a subtle sheen on the lips. It’s not as long lasting as the other two, having to be reapplied every hour or so, but it’s not a hard price to pay for a balm that feels so nice on the lips. The flavour of this balm is…well, it’s not chocolate, not to me, but it’s pleasant enough. Kind of like chocolate if you described it to those creepy Argos aliens and then asked them to make some? That.

Finally in this round-up, Korres ‘Wild Rose’ Lip Butter, the only product with it’s own colour on my lips. I tend to wear balms under my lipstick for the day, so this is a nice alternative for then I want a bit of colour without a full-on lipstick. The Lip Butter has a lovely light rose fragrance and flavour, reminding me of my much-missed ‘Lite Lip’ (seriously, LUSH, bring it back), and the most beautiful soft berry colour. In it’s pot, it looks and feels like a soft jelly, and on the lips it’s even better, lasting for a good couple of hours before fading to a soft stain. I picked this up in Waitrose a month or so back on a whim, and I’m glad I did – I’ll be looking out for more from the Korres range when I next get chance to have a wander round.

So, there you have it. Out of the lip balms I have dotted around my room, the house, and my handbags, these are the three that it would drive me mad to lose – which lip balms are keeping you sane this winter? As usual, I’m on Twitter as @Sealkitten, or you can comment on here. Have a good weekend!

Err, hello. It’s only been, what, 6 months since my last post?

Oh dear.

Well, in that six months an awful lot has happened in my life. As some of you who follow me on Twitter may have noticed, I’ve moved to a new job, and am much, much happier there. A very long story short, my old job was getting increasingly toxic, and my health was beginning to deteriorate again – it’s why my lipstick project got a little bit abandoned on here, despite soldiering on for another 2 weeks or so on Twitter before quietly stopping. My health is pretty largely dictated by my stress levels, and over the last couple of months at my old job the stress levels were going up and up, despite my attitude to the place not having changed at all – if it were not for the stressful environment and the lack of training opportunities, I would still be there now. I miss most of my colleagues from there, and am hoping to catch up with them at some point, when time permits.

My new job couldn’t be more different – I’m working more hours, an extra day a week in fact, and have an awful lot more to learn as it’s a much faster-paced workplace, but I am utterly, utterly loving it – I wouldn’t switch back to my old job now even if they were to pay me double my new salary. I’m getting the training that I wanted and the experience I desperately needed to get, whilst working with a lovely team of people and most importantly, enjoying myself. I’m even there on the 7.50am bus in the morning with a smile on my face – not something you would have seen six months ago!

Most importantly for me, I’m on the road to a new career in optics, as I can do the training I want to do to become a dispensing optician through my current workplace, as opposed to going back to university and doing another degree to do so, which would have been my only option at my old job. Much as I enjoyed (most) of university the first time round, the idea of going back to full-time study, and the debt that comes with it, was a pretty frightening idea for me. For the time being, one degree is more than enough.

So, what for the blog this time round? I won’t lie, There probably won’t be daily posting all the time, but I’m going to make a serious effort to blog at least once a week, whether it’s about make-up, my ridiculous lipstick and nail polish collections, or even just what’s going on in my life at the moment. In the meantime, I post far too much on Twitter as @Sealkitten, so feel free to pester me into posting more over there =]

I’ll be honest, this week has been a lot more stressful than it should have been, hence having a round-up of the week as opposed to daily posts. I don’t want to make a habit of doing things this way, as I’d much rather do a post a day to keep consistent. When my choice is sleep for a normal amount of hours or sit up making myself write whilst fighting my tablets, I know what I’d prefer! My sleep seems to have settled back into it’s normal pattern again, so hopefully I can get a little more consistent in everything – I’m pretty sure I was a horror to work with on Monday morning due to sleep deprivation.

MONDAY - Number 34, Lush’s ‘Celebrate’ Lip. Chosen by @jumbledwords

Oh, Lush. How I love you, I really do, but a pale mod pink with gold shimmer and the most drying formula ever…? Confession time – I bought this knowing it would look horrifically pale on my lips, but it looks GORGEOUS as a highlighter on my cheekbones. I’ll make sure that I do a face wearing it as such soon, because this really doesn’t work as a lip tint on me. I had to use a generous amount of Lanolips through the day to keep my lips from drying out too much, and even then it felt like an uphill battle. By the time I finished work I had given up the fight with this shade, and stopped applying it. It’s a KEEP, but only for it’s highlighting properties – if it didn’t work on my cheeks, this would be a BIN.

TUESDAY - Number 48, Sleek’s Pout Polish in Pink Cadillac. Chosen by my colleague, Juanita.

Sleek’s Pout Polish range is quite a nice selection of lightweight balms that pack a lot of pigment into their formula. I’ve managed to pick up three of them so far, and I’m in two minds about them. Whilst the colour is great, their lasting time is pretty pants, and out of the three I have (two of which I’ve ended up wearing this week!) only one seems to hang around longer than an hour. This is ‘Pink Cadillac’, a bright pink that looks great for about ten minutes before ending up patchy. I’ve had limited success trying these as cheek tints, but there’s a certain stickiness that makes them a touch hard to wear everyday. It’s a shame as the colour payoff is good, but i’d rather something with a little less slip and more in the way of staying power. A BIN for this one, on the patchiness and low wear time, but if the formula was tweaked, who knows?

WEDNESDAY - Number 77, Urban Decay’s ‘Naked’ Lip Junkie gloss (sample size)

Yes, yes, I know, another in-car shot. This was taken not long after I got my hair cut, and The gloss had been on for four hours at this point. I know! It still looks as good as when I first applied it, I couldn’t believe it – although I did regret wearing it whilst getting my hair cut, as it’s a very sticky formula that held my hair like glue. It’s a very minty gloss, apparently this is meant to have a plumping effect but I didn’t really notice this. This is a new addition to the list – although I am on a no-buy, my sister very kindly bought me the ‘Naked 2′ palette which this gloss came with as a ‘you finally finished the dissertation!’ present, and I’m really liking it. I got the original ‘Naked’ palette when it first came out, and whilst I love the shades in the palette I find that the cooler tones of ‘Naked 2′ is a better match for my skintone, and i’m particularly getting a lot of use out of the shades ‘Pistol’ and ‘Verve’. Going to go for a KEEP on this gloss as it’s a nice neutral shade that’ll work well on days where I go for a darker eye. Incidentally, this should have been number 74, Benefit’s ‘Benetint’ but I appear to have lost my bottle and have no idea where it’s gone – I’ll slot it in as soon as I find it.

THURSDAY - Number 75, Benefit’s ‘Posietint’ (sample size). Chosen by Reena, one of the optometrists I work with.

Love love love ‘Posietint’. I first bought it not long after it came out, and it’s been a staple part of my makeup bag ever since as it’s a massively flattering shade for me on both my lips and cheeks. Applies like a dream (certainly easier than Benetint does), lasts pretty much all day (the above shot was taken after an 11-8 shift at work with no reapplication) and is just the prettiest flush of pink. I’ve managed to hold of getting the newish ‘Cha-Cha’ tint for a while, but it’s corally-orange tones are calling to me and I have a feeling I’ll end up with a new addition to the collection by the end of the summer. It’s a KEEP on this front.

FRIDAY - Number 49, Sleek’s Pout Polish in ‘Perfect Plum’. Chosen by my colleague, Sallie.

The second of my three Pout Polishes, ‘Perfect Plum’ is a strongly pigmented shade that I can’t wear full-on as it ends up far too vampish for me. Much like ‘Pink Cadillac’ earlier in the week, this looks great when first on but fades to a patchy finish in short time. I’m wearing it blotted into my lips in the above picture, which gives you an idea of the pigmentation level, but just an hour after this all I was left with was a gooey line on the inside of my lips and a faint vanilla-coconut flavour. Not really much more to say, I’m afraid – the colour is ok, the wear isn’t, and it’s a BIN.

Other things I did this week – spent money on lovely things in Lush that came in a pretty lunchbox tin that’ll make me the coolest person in the staff cafeteria, painted my nails in Essie’s ‘Lapis of Luxury’ and found a new favourite blue polish, and started to crochet a blanket that should, hopefully, end up 200×200 rows, or the size of a double duvet. I’m already one and a half balls of wool in, and I have barely done 6 rows. Crochet is a brilliant pastime for me, as the repetitive motions and counting is rather relaxing, especially when paired with my favourite classic 50′s rock’n'roll playlist. Yes, the iPad has Cliff Richard on it. I REGRET NOTHING.

Tomorrow is a shade chosen by my boss, number 53, Revlon’s ‘Nude Lustre’ gloss, followed by number 15, MAC’s ‘Blooming Lovely’ on Monday (chosen by our second optometrist, Helen), number 23, Estee Lauder’s ‘Icy Mauve’ on Tuesday (chosen by my colleague, Hannah), and number 27, Lancome’s ‘Rose Mythique’ creme de brilliance (chosen by Adam from Lush Poole who was highly patient with me on Monday afternoon) on Wednesday. Thursday is number 18, MAC’s ‘Fold and Tuck’ as chosen by @katexe earlier today. As always, give me a shout @sealkitten with any further suggestions for colours or comments. NOw that I’m caught up again, I’m off to watch a film with the boyfriend who’s staying here for the weekend, and to sleep. Night!

I know, I know, I’m useless and this isn’t Saturday, it’s Sunday. It was 2am this morning when I realised (and tweeted) that I had totally forgotten to get today’s post up and written, and by that time I was bout ten minutes from zonking out altogether, despite feeling weirdly awake and wired. Apologies, then, for the delay in posting about number 8, M.A.C Red, and it’s lesson in careful lining.

M.A.C Red, chosen here by @RhiaPhillipswas the first MAC lipstick I bought, and also the first red I found that worked with my skintone. Before finding this brilliant red shade, I coveted pretty much any and all red-lipped look I saw but was too worried about clashing with my hair to try. I finally bit the bullet and picked up this shade whilst at university (and my god, do I miss the MAC counters in Jolly’s, Bath – it knocks the meagre Bournemouth counter into a cocked hat) and haven’t looked back since. Red shades, the brighter the better, are now my favourite go-to shades for days when I want to pep up myself a little and give the impression I’m not feeling like a zombie. As I mentioned in the ‘Heartless’, when I wear reds or other bright shades I’m pretty careful about making sure I have lined my lips with some kind of liner (usually ‘Barrier’, a clear lip liner from the lond-discontinued ‘B Never’ makeup line from Lush that I bought several backups of before they went bust), followed by application with a lip brush. Sadly, even with this, M.A.C Red has a tendency to bleed and wear after just an hour or so’s wear, leaving me with not only the dreaded ‘red ring’ around the outside of my lips, but also with that weird gooey line on the inside of my lips. Dislike. ‘Heartless’ is my prefered red over M.A.C. Red for this very reason – it wears evenly and doesn’t do that weird goo thing.

M.A.C Red is one of the Satin finish MAC lipsticks, a formula that I do like, but I had forgotten just how drying it can be after a whole day of wear. By the time my shift ended yesterday, my lips felt desiccated, and I couldn’t wait to get home to find my trusty Lanolips and restore some moisture to them. I had to do quite a few touch-ups through the day as well, making this a less than optimal choice for a work day. It’s a shame, really, as all the comments I had on the colour were positive.

M.A.C. Red is going to be a KEEP for the time being, as I don’t want to go through my ‘Heartless’ too fast, but I’ll be keeping it for evenings out as opposed to everyday wear because of the formula. Today, being Sunday, is my day off from coloured products and I’m using Lanolips like nobody’s business to get my lips ship-shape for the week ahead! Monday’s product is Lush’s ‘Celebrate’ lip tint, as chosen by @jumbledwords.

The gloss I wore yesterday was a good example of a gloss – sadly, today’s just didn’t cut it for me. ELF/Eyes Lips Face are well-known for doing good makeup at low prices, but it seems more and more like they are saving the good products for the Studio line, as opposed to the core £1.50 range. Today’s gloss, number 69 ‘Flirt’ (chosen by @thelildarkpoet), is from said £1.50 line, and I suspect that the younger audience it is closer to would be more than happy with this sweet-tasting, shiny gloss. For someone like me who spoils herself with Chanel and Dior when pay day rolls around, however, I found the formula on this gloss to be lacking all around.

The above shot is yet another quick snap in the car on the way to work – I’ll hold my hands up, my time management is a little poor at the moment, as my bed is far too comfortable and I like to get every single minute of sleep I can possibly grab before work. The consistency of the gloss is a little stickier than yesterday’s offering from No7, and yet nowhere near as long lasting. Just an hour after starting work I was reapplying this gloss, and not long after lunch I gave up totally on reapplying, as the gloss lasted barely longer than the slight toffee-ish flavour. Despite being a milky pink in the tube, there’s barely an colour to this gloss once it’s on the lips. I imagine it would work as a top coat over a pink lipstick, but on it’s own it’s just not enough for my liking. A little too sticky as well – I was forever hooking my hair off of my lips whilst talking to customers!

Last picture today was taken after work, and shows the gloss a bit more than the pre-work shot. I don’t regret getting this and giving it a go at just £1.50, but I wouldn’t repurchase. This lip product is another BIN. Incidentally, in the above picture I’ve got the Dr Jart+ Water Fuse BB on, and I’m rather liking it for summer wear. It’s nice and light, evening out my skin tone without looking heavy. The best bit about it, however, is that it’s aple enough for me to use, and it’s a real BB, as opposed to a tinted moisturiser with a bit of SPF in it. It’s being stocked in Boots at the moment, although the sales lady I spoke to was under the impression it was only being stocked as a one-off thing – I do hope not.

Tomorrow is number 8, MAC’s ‘M.A.C. Red’ sating finish lipstick, the first red-red that I found to suit my skintone, and it was picked out by my friend @RhiaPhillips. I’ve got a good week and a half planned through now thanks to co-workers and people on Twitter, but I’m always open to new numbers, so keep on sending them to me if you haven’t done so already! I’d also like to say hello to any new readers or followers – hope that I don’t witter on too much! Tomorrow’s post may be a touch delayed, as I am working the late shift, but I will try and get it up ASAP when I get home.

I’m not the biggest fan of glosses – often too sticky and not enough colour – but this is one of the few that I enjoy wearing. Today’s product, (number 39) No7′s ‘Smile’, is a sugar-pink gloss with a semi-sheer milky tone and a very subtle hint of shimmer. The gloss lasts a good 3-4 hours before disappearing, and isn’t so sticky that it glues my hair to my lips at the slightest gust of wind. One of my favourite things is the flavour on this one – a sweet, slightly fruity flavour, but not at all overpowering. The gloss fades to leave a sugary pink colour behind that’s just enough to lift my barely-there natural lip colour into a rather pretty shade. Pictures are terrible today, I’m afraid – a quick locker room snap from before work, and a shaky shot taken in the car that shows the lip colour slightly better. Still, I said I’d post pictures, despite how they look, so here you go!

The above photo was taken on the way to work in the car (I wan’t driving, I hasten to add) just after applying the gloss, and the below shot was taken a good four hours later, whilst I was on my break at work. Working in a opticians, I do an awful lot of talking and drink water constantly because of this, so anything I wear to work takes a little bit of a battering in the course of the day – usually, lots of reapplications are needed.

I know, I know, it’s blurry and rubbish.

This gloss is a KEEP, because I firmly believe that everyone needs a good neutral pink gloss for those days where you just need a little lift. I’ve only binned one of four so far – must be more ruthless in future! Tomorrow’s gloss is very similar, number 69 – ELF’s ‘Flirt’ as chosen by @thelildarkpoet so I may be finding another to bin tomorrow night.

Chosen by the lovely @Lame_Face when she was round for dinner with the boyfriend and I last night, ‘Heartless’ is an utterly beautiful red from MAC’s 2010 Venomous Villains collection, which I will admit to spending far too much money on. This was the only lip product I bought from the collection, and I mainly bought it on a whim, because come on, it’s Cruella de Ville’s red – how could I not get it? I’ve paired it here with another product from the collection, the highly subtle ‘Her Own Devices’ beauty powder (another Cruella product) which is meant to be a multi-purpose powder, but for me it’s the perfect shade for a very light, subtle bit of contouring. If I could only choose one powder product to use ever again, this would be it, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that MAC repromotes this one before I run out so I can buy several backups!

Sadly, my iPhone doesn’t pick up the full deep red tones of this lipstick properly – I will eventually be taking pictures with a proper camera again, I hasten to add, but it’s gone AWOL within the last few weeks, so iPhone is about as good as it gets at the moment. I think the best way to describe this is as a neutral red (on me, at least), as it doesn’t have the blue or orange undertones the majority of my reds have. The wear time is fantastic, and I usually get a good four or five hours out of this without needing a touch-up if I’m not eating during that time.

This was after about five hours, with the slightest touch-up after lunch, and the red is as vivid as when I applied it, despite the sun disappearing. I think this is partly due to the Amplified formula, one of my favourite MAC formulas for it’s creamy finish and non-drying nature, but also because of my careful application with a lip brush when I first put this on, and then blotting before a second coat. Sometimes, just sometimes, my Nan comes through with good makeup tips!

WIthout a doubt, this is a KEEP - I have a lot of reds, but this is one I return to time and time again because of the beautiful finish it gives. The next few days are a mixed bag, product-wise – my Twitter plea for numbers earlier now has me booked up until Sunday, with the following products –

Thursday – number 39, No7′s ‘Smile’ HIgh Shine Gloss as chosen by @retsiemzzarf
Friday – number 69, ELF’s ‘Flirt’ Hypershine Gloss as chosen by @thelildarkpoet (with a bonus Bill and Ted reference
Saturday – number 8, MAC’s ‘M.A.C. Red’ as chosen by @RhiaPhillips
Sunday – number 34, Lush’s ‘Celebrate’ lip tint, as chosen by @jumbledwords

So just a few to go on this weekend! You can send me numbers for the following few days on Twitter (@Sealkitten as usual, or you can comment on the master list post.

Sat writing this whilst Daniel and our friend Leyla talk science, the universe and everything, and I!m glad today’s lipstick has worn off. The minute I put it on this morning (late morning, I admit, it’s my day off and I’ve been lazy) i knew this would take a miracle for me to like. The shade is off putting, the formula is drying and I’m pretty sure it started to feather after about an hour – it’s not endeared itself to me well.

It doesn’t look so bad here, but in real life this lipstick is a rather garish shade. It could probably have been a better shade had I applied it with a lip brush (a bit tidier) but it’s still not a great shade. Bit too pink, bit too blue-y, just not my favourite shade. Tomorrow’s lipstick is an insane red, chosen by Leyla, but that’s more my comfort zone than this pink is.

I’ll update tomorrow with a picture in the tube, but it’s just the face shot for now – I’m far too tired to set up a shot. Tomorrow’s lipstick is number 12, MAC’s ‘Heartless’, the Cruella de Ville shade from the 2010 Venomous Villains, chosen at random from Leyla. I’m worried that the boyfriend won’t kiss me tomorrow because it’s the kind of screaming red he hates but I adore.

Bedtime now, sorry it’s a late post but there’s been a lot of talking and lasagne tonight, and my duvet is calling.

EDIT: As I forgot to put this in last night, this lipstick is a BIN. Too drying and a horrible colour. Onwards and upwards!

Chosen by hellopolly on Twitter last night, there couldn’t have been a better product for me to kick things off with, nor could there have been one I would be more disappointed to have to wait two months(ish) to wear again! YSL’s Rouge Philtre has been a staple of my routine since I picked it up in April this year, and I’ve used up about a fifth of it already if the packaging is anything to go by. At around £22.50, it’s not a cheap buy, but it’s more than worth it for the ease of use and bright, beautiful colour that it imparts.

Application with this is a dream – the doe applicator is angled to allow you to cover the whole of the lip, whilst the pointy tip means you can get a nice clean line without the need for a lip brush or extra liner. I usually use two layers of this – the first gives a lovely long-lasting stain, but the second amps things up and makes this the most beautiful glossy berry shade. I’ve lost count of the amount of compliments I’ve had when wearing this, which is always a sign that a lip colour suits you!

The above picture was taken at 8.30am this morning when I first applied it, and the glossy colour really shows well. Colleagues were pretty complimentary about this one, though I think they’re waiting for the more unusual shades in my collection to appear – they’re already amused by the idea of the orange and browns in my collections for the humour side of things.

The last picture today is from after lunch, about 1.45pm. The glossy finish is all but gone, but the stain is still there – pretty impressive for just over five hours wear, and I doubt that there’s much else in my collection that’ll last me this well without re-application.

Final thoughts on this one then? KEEP. This is a product I’ll buy again and again when I run out, and I am sorely tempted to get another in a different shade when I finish this project because I just can’t find fault with the formula. It’s just a shame I can’t wear it again for so long!

Tomorrow’s lipstick was chosen through the highly technical method of shouting through my sister’s wall for a number – she has no idea what’s what on the list, and as far as I know can’t be bothered to read this, so it’s not been influenced in any way. Number 64 is Avon’s ‘Rose Addiction’, a discontinued shade from the Colourdisiac lineup, and a pretty classic rose pink with slight brown undertones. Now, I am off to eat pizza in the sunshine with the boyfriend, who is down here for a few days – have a good evening, wherever you are.

Proving that not only do I have too many lipsticks, but also that I have too much time on my hands, I’ve spent the afternoon carefully listing the products I’m using for the next few months. I’ve listed names, brands, and whether things are current products, discontinued or limited edition (LE) products, just in case anyone feels the need to replicate my terrible spending habits and buy one of the products I’ll be using. I’ve tried to keep things as up-to-date as possible, but if you see something wrong on here or something marked as being discontinued when it’s not, please give me a shout. As far as I am aware, this list is the entirety of my collection of colour lip products, but any I find lurking about the house will be added on to the end of the list as I find them.
So they’re in the same place as the rest, the rules –

1 – No lipstick will be re-worn until the the list is completed, no matter how much I love it.
2 – All products must be marked as KEEP or BIN by the end of the wearing day.
3 – Sundays are the day off – only lipbalm allowed.
4 – No new products until the end of the challenge.
5 – All products must be blogged about, and accompanied by an image, no matter how
awful they may look.

The first product to be worn has been chosen by the lovely hellopolly on twitter after being the first to reply to my cry for help, and I could not possibly love her any more for this, as she’s chosen my current favourite product, number 22 – Rouge Philtre (YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain shade 10). Tomorrow, on the 18th, I’ll wear this for the entire day, and then be rather sad about not being able to wear it for at least another 75 products – but then again, I’ve got another 75 products to possibly fall in love with.

Until tomorrow, have a good evening wherever you are.
